Information

The Paris Observatory is a Research center in astronomy and astrophysics. It depends on the ministry of Youth, National Education and Research, and belongs to Great Establishments. Its status is that of a University, by derogation.

Missions

According to its Constitution, it fulfills 3 fondamental missions:

* Research, in contributing to more knowledge on the Universe.
It has to provide to the international community services in relation to its research activity and to collaborate scientifically with the other countries.
* Initial and continuous formation
* Diffusion of knowledge

Visitors stepping into the Perreault Building, whose architecture dates back to 1667, are entering one of France’s most ancient scientific institutions, located in the heart of the capital. Created by Colbert, the Observatoire de Paris has participated in major astronomical discoveries for the past three centuries.
