Colosseum

(Curiosities)

City: Rome

Information

The Colosseum is one of the largest remaining ancient structures. It is also the largest amphitheatre. The oval base (measured between the axles) 188 by 156 meters, has a circumference of 527 meters and officially offered to 50.000 people at the time.

The Colosseum is today one of the major attractions of Rome and one of the most famous buildings in the world, which can be hosts in the list Eiffel Tower and Statue of Liberty.

Although the building construction, roof and natural disasters has turned into a ruin, it is since the 17th century recognized by the popes of Rome as historically interesting and therefore protected. It has since been forbidden to extract materials from the construction and the wooden floor, which was once the scene of gladiators, sports and other games, is partly rebuilt according to the specifications of the tradition, but with modern techniques and materials.

Everyday thousands of people visit the Colosseum to gaze at this spectacular structure and imagine the immense effort it would have taken to create.

The Colosseum... It's so beautiful, that I can't believe it's build so long ago. Too bad it's not maintained very well. Seems everything is deteriarating quickly. :(
