Information

The discovery of one of the world's purest silver deposits in 1624 is responsible for the exsistence of Kongsberg, and resulted in a silver rush in the 17th century. The silver mining continued to 1805. Mining enthusiasts may enjoy the Norsk Bergverksmuseum (Mining Museum), which tells the story of mining. The museum includes also the Royal Mint and a small ski museum. The silver mines are open for visits and make an interesting excursion for the whole family. In summer, special guided tours are available daily, ranging from easy to quite adventurous. Getting there: Kongsberg lies on highway E134, about 80 km south of Oslo. The mining Museum is a 700 m walk south of the railway station. The silver mines lie outside Saggrenda, 8 km west of town. Drive E134 in the direction of Notodden and look for the sign leading off to the right. You can also take the local bus 390 from outside the railway station.
