The museum is named after Pieter Teyler van der Hulst (1702-1778), a wealthy Haarlem cloth and silk manufacturer. As a representative of the Enlightenment he had great interest in art and science. In both areas, he explained to collections from the idea that knowledge could enrich mankind. In his will he also determined that its ability to be placed in a foundation, inter alia, the promotion of art and science aims. The Oval Room was opened to visitors in 1784. Teyler Museum became the oldest public museum in the Netherlands.
