The museum is named after Pieter Teyler van der Hulst (1702-1778), a wealthy Haarlem cloth and silk manufacturer. As a representative of the Enlightenment he had great interest in art and science. In both areas, he explained to collections from the idea that knowledge could enrich mankind.
