The Gelati Monastery or Monastery of the Virgin at Gelati is a monastery near the city of Kutaisi in western Georgia.
The Eastern Orthodox monastery was built by the King of Georgia David the Builder (1089-1125) in 1106.
The Gelati was one of the most important cultural and educational centers of ancient Georgia. At the academy worked best Georgian scientists, theologians and philosophers.
In the monastery are still many murals and manuscripts from the Middle Ages to see.
King David the Builder is buried in the monastery
In 1994 the monastery was declared a World Heritage by UNESCO.
