The city wall of Valkenburg is a 600 year old gate: The Grendelpoort. This medieval gate was built around 1330. The exact year is not known, because no documentation exists. The construction of the city wall was started in 1329. A few years later the Grendelpoort established.

The gate was guarded by guards in a guardhouse built, but despite that still a number of times changed, maybe even rebuilt parts.

To this day, the Grendelpoort well maintained. No luxury with such an old age, but the gate is still standing.
