About Picardie
Lined by the Channel in the North, Picardie includes three departments: Somme, Aisne and Oise and 2,292 communes. Close to Paris and a border region until 1659, Picardie’s destiny was closely linked to that of France itself. The homeland of kings, it was invaded by Romans, Huns, Franks, Normans and Flemish and suffered from the Hundred Years War, the Wars of Religion, The Thirty Years war and above all World War I.
The region has a population of nearly two million and is the 12th most populated in France.
Between rivers Marne and Somme, Picardie displays many facets. Gothic in Amiens, Beauvais or Laon, royal in Chantilly or Compiegne, it is bucolic in Somme or in the Aisne pastures.
