Mers-les-bains: travel & holiday

Sheltered at the foot of the highest chalk cliffs in Europe, Mers lies at the mouth of the river Bresle, a natural border between Picardie and Normandy. The Mers seaside quarter is a unique example of the architecture of the Belle Époque. It is said that some of the ironwork on the cosy houses in which stayed writers Jules Verne or Victor Hugo, was the work of Gustave Eiffel, another Mers regular.

The statue, also known as Our Lady of the Sea, was inaugurated in 1878. Its base was decorated by sculptor Marie-Jospehe Cotelle Clere, who represented the three patron saints of sister towns Mers, Eu and Le Treport.
