Italy: Travelling & Vacation

The Italian Republic is located in southeastern Europe. The boot shaped peninsula borders France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia on its north. The Adriatic, Ionian, Tyrrhenian, Ligurian and Mediterranean Sea surround the rest of the boot. Sicily, Sardine and Elba are islands that are also part of Italy. The capital is Rome, in which the independent Vatican City is located. Approximately 58 million inhabitants populate Italy.
75% of the country is mountainous or hilly, the backbone of the peninsula is formed by the Appenine Mountains which lead to the north-west where they join the Alps. Italy is often associated with its volcanoes, the active Etna on Sicily and the dormant Vesuvius near Naples. Italy is further known for its cuisine, art, music and literature.
