Imagine a museum where you can see virtually all of Norway in a day! At Norsk Folkemuseum - the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, we give you a glimpse of Norwegian history, everyday life and festive occasions of the Norwegian people. With more than 155 houses and numerous objects from all major regions the Open-Air Museum shows traditional farms from the various regions with their wooden barns, stables, storehouses and dwellings as well as city houses in the Old Town. The focus is chiefly the 17th - 19th century although there are several remarkable medieval houses as the famous Stave Church from Gol, from approximately 1200 AD. During the summer season the museum teams with life as hosts in traditional costumes daily welcome our visitors. Various handicrafts are demonstrated and daily activities as baking of "lefse" and horse-and-buggy rides are very popular amongst our young visitors. They can also try out the Historic Playground or the old fashioned sweets at the Grocery Store. Ongoing events during summer include folk dance on Sundays, visiting the animals, concerts on selected day and much more. The permanent displays Norwegian Folk Costumes, Folk Art, Sami Culture, Norway's First Hall of Parliament and Toys are often accompanied by temporary exhibits.
