The Federal Republic of Germany is a central European country, formed by 16 federations. It is bordered by the Baltic Sea, Denmark and the North Sea to its north, Poland and the Czech Republic to its east, Austria and Switzerland to its south, and to its west Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. With a total of approximately 82.4 million inhabitants it is the second most populated country in Europe (Russia is number one). Germany is one of the most important members of the European Union, as well as one of the most important economic, political and military organizations of Europe. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990 Berlin is now again the political capitol of Germany. It must be noted that still great parts of Eastern Germany are economically poor.
