About Berkelpoort
The Berkel Gate in Valkenburg is situated in the Western part of the city wall and is about 600 years old. The gate gave access to the city and was well guarded by watchmen.
This was necessary because there were many enemy attacks.
The name comes from Berkel Gate Mr De Birck Laer, who was the tenant. He managed the drawbridge, which stretched over the canal and was joined at the gate.
