Karthala Vulkaan
(Curiosities)
City: Moroni
Information
The Karthala Volcano is the southernmost and largest of the two shield volcanoes that together form the island of Grand Comore. The inhabitants of the Comoros Island also have this under the name Ngazidja Island.
The top of the Karthala is less than three to four kilometers in that it is repeated in bursts collapsed. There are more than twenty eruptions recorded since the 19th century both the top and the vents on the sides of the volcano. Many lava flows have reached the sea on both sides of the island. One of these lava flows, which was released during an eruption in 1860 traveled about 13 km to the north west, reaching the western coast north of the capital city of Moroni.
The name Moroni means "in the heart of the fire." That's because so close to the Karthala the city. Although all are volcanic islands of the Comoros, Karthala is the only active volcano and probably the world's largest. The crater is accessible for travelers. It should be this one day walk, which is certainly not punishment in the beautiful nature. At the top of the volcano is a shelter the night can be spent.
A fantastic experience!
