Dorset's county town has been at the centre of English life since Roman times, when Dorchester began as the fortified settlement of Durnovaria, its old walls now traced by tree-lined walks around the modern centre. Thomas Hardy set much of his fiction here, and the same market-town streets that inspired him now hold independent cafes for a slow morning, a handful of restaurants for an evening meal, and cosy hotels for those wanting to linger a little longer.
