Lynton clings to the wooded cliffs above the Bristol Channel, where the old cliff railway still hauls carriages down to the harbour village of Lynmouth below. Known as Little Switzerland for its dramatic gorge scenery, it makes a fine base for exploring Exmoor on foot before returning to one of the local hotels for the night. Afterwards, settle into one of the town's cafes for a warming drink with a view over the valley.
