Founded in the 1790s as a planned market town by Sir William Douglas, Castle Douglas grew rich on the cattle trade and still carries that unhurried, well-ordered charm in its wide main street. Today it's better known as a food lovers' stop in Dumfries and Galloway, where local cafes serve up hearty plates between visits to Threave Castle nearby. After a day exploring, the town's hotels offer a comfortable base for the night.
