Hidden in a fold of Loch Broom, this planned fishing village was laid out by the British Fisheries Society back in 1788, and its whitewashed harbourfront still hums with the comings and goings of the CalMac ferry to Stornoway. Ullapool rewards a slow visit: settle into one of the local cafes for a coffee with loch views, or bed down at one of the area's hotels before setting out to explore the surrounding Highland wilderness.
