About Buttermarkt
This narrow lane in the Altstadt owes its name to the butter merchants who had their stalls here in the Middle Ages. Because the butter trade was lucrative, handsome burgher houses were built that you still see along the lane. The street runs through the historic heart of the city close to the Rhine.
